  1. The Bowl is where the hollow is cut for the tobacco.
  2. The Shank is an extension of the bowl, smoke is drawn through the shank to the stem.
  3. The Stem is the removable part of the pipe.
  4. The Tenon is the part that fits into the shank.
  5. The Bit is the end that is held between the teeth or lips.
  6. The Pot is where the tobacco is placed.
  7. The Carbon layer or Cake starts to form after the first few smokes.
  8. The Flue is the channel by which smoke passes from the bowl, through the shank, to the end of the stem.
  9. The Filter or System these can range from metal filters to carbon filters, these are used to regulate the smoke and trap particles of tobacco.
